San Pedro El Gran Carnaval is described as "Mardis Gras Island style"starting March 2 and ending on March 6, during the week leading up to Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Season. Groups of Dancers called "Comparsas" dress up in fun costumes and dance through the main streets of the town. The male comparsa usually steals the show because they are well-known and influential men in the community who dress up like women and dance. Each year prizes are given to the best dance group. Children from all ages also participate in carnaval. On the last day of Carnaval painters flood the street to paint each other. This simply means that a mixture of water paint and water or raw eggs is used to paint people on the streets, the goal being to paint as many people as you can. Everyone is usually respectful of persons who do not wish to get painted, however if you are out and about expect to get caught up in the fun!
